Former Adamawa Gov, Nyako, In EFCC Custody

Former Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, on Monday was a guest of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abuja, where he was questioned on matters relating to fraud allegations against him.

He was still in the custody of the EFCC at the time of filing this report in the evening.

The commission had earlier invited Nyako for interrogation, and he turned himself in to forestall further embarrassment, four months after the commission declared him wanted on February 4, 2015.

It was reported that Nyako, a retired Navy admiral and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who was ousted from office when the House of Assembly impeached him last year, had been in Europe for close to a year, ostensibly to avoid harassment from the anti-graft agency.

The EFCC had declared Nyako and his son, Abdulaziz, also a retired naval officer, wanted for alleged corrupt enrichment, criminal conspiracy, stealing, abuse of office and money laundering.

It was alleged that Nyako, directly or indirectly, supervised the looting of the treasury of Adamawa State, following which key officials of his administration, including then Secretary to the State Government, Commissioners for Finance and Higher Education, as well as the Accountant-General of the State, and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry for Local Governments were arrested.

The Permanent Secretary, among others, was accused of making cash withdrawals of over N2 billion in 181 different transactions, in tranches of between N3 and N9 million per transaction from the State-Local Government Joint Account with First Bank between August 29, 2011 and 2012.

Nyako, reports said, was in company with the former governor of Kano State and senator-elect for Kano Central, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Governor Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State on arrival at the Abuja Airport.

An aide of the ex-governor claimed that Nyako decided to return following the inauguration of Buhari as President and the emergence of his associate, Jibrilla Bindow, as Governor of Adamawa State.

Nyako’s impeachment, under controversial circumstances, which he has challenged in court, is believed to be a fall-out of his disagreement with former President Goodluck Jonathan, which calumniated in his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, along with four other governors of the PDP.
